Josh (& youth group) serves Navajo community

Josh is on a missions trip with our Portland church body. They're serving a New Mexican Navajo church and community.

This week, they are doing construction on the church building (very basic; they don't even have running water), running a basketball camp for kids, and getting to know junior high and high schoolers in the evenings.

Josh would love to have you visit their blog (sccyouthblog.wordpress.com) that gives daily updates on how God is using our team to bless these people. Check it out!

Too Cute to Handle!

E-mail update from Caleb Murrell. If you have trouble viewing, view this e-mail in your browser Basketball/English Camp Hosting a basketball/English camp for kids who had never interacted with a non-Chinese person, was an incredible experience. Three people went with me to the school, with two of them being my main helpers. With their help, we put on a high-quality camp with custom-made jersey's and awards. We even included the Chinese all-time favorite: Speeches to both begin and end the camp. The weather forecast predicted heavy rain for each day of the camp. I was discouraged when I woke up the first morning to a dreadful down pour. We began the camp that morning inside with the speeches and a short English lesson. But then from that point on, the rain stopped and a fresh coolness settled on Xiajia. We played basketball in cool air, which is pretty amazing considering we're in the second hottest area in China. The last day of the camp was a half day ending at 11 am. And guess what? The rain came down, on the dot, at 11 am just as we finished up the camp. A big thank you goes to the Boss! Also, thank you for joining with me during this time. I will be going on a three-day trip with my Chinese friends here to Le Yie, which has the biggest sink holes in the world. Looking forward to spending time with these friends. Caleb After the camp, the leader of the school took us up a mountain for a special dinner for only really important people, and me. While we were there, the owner had this great idea to have me write something in English, which he is going to hand carve out and hang in his house. Although I was extremely skeptical, he loved it. I'm attempting to suck a snail out of its shell. You really have to give it a strong, quick suck to get the whole snail on the first try. Copyright © 2013 Caleb Murrell, All rights reserved. Lunch At "Nick's" In San Clemente To Celebrate Merry's Birthday

Caleb's Journey

Miraculous Timing

On my second day in China, I made two friends who recently changed their names to Peter and Steven. Those names are not common here, you could say. They joined the Club a few months before I arrived, and about a week ago, they were both dunked under the water to show their new life: the washing away of the old self and the putting on of the new self.
They have taken me all over the city, including going to a Chinese “rock” concert and river rafting. We also went swimming at a pool, which we got kicked out of because my swim trunks went to my knees instead of being much shorter. Anyway, we have become great friends exploring the city and talking about our lives in Him.
These magnificent mountains surround a small community where I have been teaching English and basketball at the local school. Next week, my translator, the two buddies I mentioned above, and I will be putting on a basketball/English camp for three days. We and the students will be staying at the school so it will be an eventful three days!
This is a huge opportunity to serve the school leaders and the youth. The youth absolutely love basketball, even though they don’t have adequate footwear. They play barefoot just as good as anybody with shoes. Another important aspect of this camp is developing a network for a CHOSEN teacher at the school who is hoping to start the first Club in this town.
Thank you for your thoughts to the Boss!
